Pothanmedu is about 6km from munnar. It is enormous plantations of tea, coffee and the spice cardamom. Pervaded by picturesque hills and verdant mountains, the place attracts a lot of trekkers.
Devikulam Hill Station
Devikulam Hill Station is about 7km munnar. It is literally means that “the Pond of Goddess”. According to legend Sita the consort of Lord Rama, once had a bath in this lake. It is a beautiful place with a lot of tea plantations.
Pallivasal is situated 8 km from Munnar and is the site of the first Hydro Electric project of the State. The place abounds in natural beauty.
Attukal is about 9km from Munnar. It is famous for its waterfalls and serene hills. Attukal located between Munnar and Pallivasal, is a feast for the eyes. The place is also ideal for long treks.
Nyayamakad is about 10km from Munnar. It is located in between Munnar and Rajamala. Nyaymakad is a land of breathtaking waterfalls. The waters roll down the hills from a height of 1600m in a splendid cascade gaining momentum with every inch of their long track.
Chithirapuram is about 10 km from munnar. It has beautiful little cottages, grand bungalows, old playgrounds and courts. Pallivasal Hydro Power Project is located here. There are also picturesque tea plantations.
Mattupetty is about 13 km from Munnar. It is a wonderfully place with a lake and a dam. The sheet of water squired by mighty mountains makes it a fine picnic spot. There are also tea plantations, DTPC Munnar provides boating facilities on the Mattupetty Dam Speed launch and slow speedboat and motorboats are available on hire. The altitude of the region is about 1700m above sea level. There is a highly specialized dairy farm the Indo Swiss Livestock Project. Visitors are permitted to enter only 3 of the 11 cattle sheds here.
Power House Waterfalls
Power House Waterfalls is about 18km from Munnar. This place is worth a halt on the way to the Periyar wildlife sanctuary. The inspiring cascade of the enormous waters down the steep rock 2000m above the sea level is there to stand and admire. The scenery of the gregarious western mountains leaves in the minds a lasting impression.
Kundala is about 20km from Munnar. Kundala is a picturesque town on the way to Top Station. The vast Golf course located here belongs to Tata Tea Ltd. The presence of Kundala dam adds to the charm. The wonderful waterfall of ‘Aruvikkad’ is located near ‘Kundala’.
Anayirankal is about 22km form Munnar. The delightful dam and the beautiful reservoir amidst a vast expanse of aromatic tea plantations of the Tata Tea Ltd. And the evergreen forests all combine to make it an ideal picnic spot.
Top Station is about 32 km south east of Munnar and 1700 meters above sea level. From top station, we get a panoramic view of kambam in the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. Top Station is along the Munnar to Kodaikanal road. Through there is short cut, it is not accessible even by jeep. During the time of the British rule, for transportation of tea and manpower, they had constructed a rope way as well as a mini local rail line. This was later destroyed by natural calamities but, the remains are still left.
Marayoor is about 40km from Munnar. This is the only place in Kerala where there is a natural growth of Sandalwood Trees. The place cherishes the subtle fragrance. The Forest Department runs a sandalwood factory. To visit the forest, one must get permission from the forest authorities. There are also wonderful caves whose walls are adorned with painting and sculptures relating to the “New Stoneage Civilization”. The children’s park and a huge banyan tree are among the salient features. Thoovanam waterfalls and the Rajiv Gandhi National Park are close by.
The marvelous waterfalls of Cheeyapara are simply a visual feast as the waters roll down in a seven step cascade. Cheeyapara and Valara waterfalls are located between Neriamangalam and Adimali on the Kochi-Madurai highway. This place also attracts trekkers.
A Mamoth rock of about 500 acres in area upon which spreads two lavish acres of beautiful evergreen forest is behind the fame of the place which challenges mountaineers.
Malankara Reservoir is about 6km from Thodapuzha. It is a wonderful artificial lake. Boating and fishing are very popular here.
Thommankuthu is about 28 km from Thodapuzha. This waterfalls here again like the ‘Cheeyapara falls’ flow down a flight of seven steps in a captivating cascade forming a pool beneath each step. Adventures are attracted to the place in large numbers.
Kalvari Mount is a famous pilgrim centre on the way to Kattappana.
